BIOSKETCH:
Having graduated from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 1970 he trained in three residency programs: University of California, Davis Family Practice program through the school affiliation with Valley Medical Center, Fresno, California (chief resident), General Radiology, Long Beach Veterans Hospital (Long Beach, California)/University of California, Irvine, and Radiation Oncology, Oregon Health Science University, Portland, Oregon as a student under one of the “Father’s of Radiation Oncology”, William T. Moss MD. He is grateful for the broad educational experience of his formal training. With a background in Family Practice he feels as if he never left the field but expanded patient care principles to the field of Radiation Oncology. When asked as to his relationship with his patients, Dr. Shafer stated, “My patients become my friends.” Also a survivor of cancer, he understands the emotional aspects of dealing with cancer. Over the years Dr. Shafer has endeavored to foster public and professional awareness and knowledge of cancer, especially the field of Radiation Oncology. He has given many professional and public lectures and talks. His experience is broad. He feels that his medical career has been challenging but very personally rewarding. For ten years prior to moving to the Chicago area, he was medical director of the Community Cancer Center in Roseburg, Oregon. While in Oregon he was being instrumental in assisting the Emma Romera de Callejas Cancer Clinic, Tegucigalpa, Honduras, SA, in obtaining the Cobalt 60 therapy equipment with all the ancillary support programs to facilitate a cancer program in this medically needy country. This project was in honor of the then President of Honduras whose mother had lost her life to breast cancer. The field of radiation oncology is huge allowing radiation oncologists to have special interests customizing their practice. Dr. Shafer has been very active in brachytherapy (placing radioactive sources inside of tumors) over the years. He trained with one of the pioneers of modern brachytherapy, Dr. N. Syed. In addition he was a radiation oncologist at the United States Department of Energy, Fermilab treating cancer patients with high energy neutrons (one of only six facilities in the world). Over the past ten years he has focused his practice in Prostate Cancer, treating patients at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, Illinois and the Chicago Prostate Cancer Center, Westmont, Illinois. Dr. Shafer was board certified in Therapeutic Radiology in 1977. Currently he lives in Del Webb Sun City, Huntley. He is married and has three children with six grandchildren. EDUCATION:
